The Academic Olympics began in 1989 and was hosted by Aquinas High School. After Aquinas closed, the event was moved to Cabrini in 2001. This event gives Catholic grade schools in the Downriver area a chance to compete in various academic areas. Each school can send 14 students to represent them in various subject areas. Two students are sent for each subject. One eighth-grader and one seventh-grader from each team take a one hour test in their subject area. Subject areas include art, english, health, social studies, math, science, and religion. Each school receives 1 point for each individual medal won by a student. After testing is complete, the students have lunch and participate in various recreational games in the school gym. The day concludes in the church with the announcement of individual and team winners.
